Building Independence
in the Community
Community Engagement services provide structured, community-based support for individuals with developmental disabilities who want to build independence, strengthen social connections, and participate fully in everyday community life.
Our team works alongside individuals and families in homes, community spaces, and the places where life happens, supporting practical skill building and the kind of social engagement that comes from real participation.

When Community Engagment May Be Appropriate
Community Engagement may be appropriate for individuals who:
- Have a developmental disability diagnosis or qualifying eligibility
- Are working to build independence in daily life
- Want more structured opportunities to participate in community activities
- Are working on social, communication, or self-advocacy skills
- Could use support navigating transportation, community spaces, or new environments
Our team can help you understand eligibility, including waiver options if applicable, and figure out which services match your goals.

Our Approach to Community Engagement
Our approach is built on the belief that real community engagement happens in the community, not in a program room. We work alongside each person to identify the goals, activities, and connections that matter to them, then support skill building and participation in the actual places where life happens.

Common Questions, Clear Answers
No. While both services support independence, they serve different populations and have different focus areas. Adult Mental Health Skill Building is designed for adults living with mental health conditions and focuses on daily functioning and stability. Community Engagement is designed for individuals with developmental disabilities and focuses on social participation, skill building, and inclusion in community life. The eligibility, funding, and service models are distinct.
Services are delivered in the home, in community spaces, and in the places where each person wants to build skills and connections. This may include local businesses, recreation centers, libraries, community events, places of worship, and other settings that match the individual's interests and goals.

Length of services depends on each family's progress toward the goals set in the Individualized Service Plan. IIH is designed to be intensive but time-limited, with most families participating for several months as they work toward stability. Our team reviews progress regularly and adjusts the timeline based on the family's needs.
We accept Anthem, Aetna Better Health, Magellan, Humana, Sentara, and United Healthcare/Optum. Coverage and eligibility vary by plan, so contact our team and we can help verify your specific benefits before services begin.
