Care That
Begins with Trust
Brothers' Keeper provides community-based mental health, crisis, and support services for children, adults, and families across the Greater Richmond region. Our work is focused on stability, growth, and connection in the places where people live, learn, and recover.
For more than two decades, we have worked alongside families, schools, hospitals, and community partners to provide care that is accessible, coordinated, and built on real relationships.

Our Mission
To create a supportive environment where youth and adults have the opportunity to grow and become productive members of their home, school, and community. We strengthen academic achievement, improve social functioning, develop coping and problem-solving skills, and foster a sense of responsibility, self-worth, and meaningful connection within the community.
Our Vision
To build stronger, healthier communities where individuals and families are empowered to thrive with confidence, stability, and meaningful connection.
1.
Community-Based Support
Care is delivered in homes, schools, hospitals, and community settings. We meet people in the environments where challenges actually show up, which makes the work more practical and the results more lasting.
2.
Coordinated and Structured Care
Our team works alongside families, schools, medical providers, and community partners to make sure every step of care is connected. That means clear communication, consistent follow-through, and well-defined next steps at every stage.
3.
Skill Development and Growth
We help clients build the skills that support long-term stability, including emotional regulation, communication, problem-solving, daily living, and social functioning. Skills are practiced in real settings so they hold up outside the session.
4.
Stability and Accountability
Our services support responsibility, independence, and meaningful engagement at home, at school, and in the community. We measure success by the progress clients sustain over time, not just the moments they get through.

meet our founders
David and Katrina Banks are community leaders and advocates for mental health and youth empowerment who founded Brothers' Keeper Inc. in 2002 with a shared vision of restoring hope, empowering individuals, and strengthening communities throughout Richmond and surrounding counties.
David grew up in Richmond during the 1970s, where he experienced firsthand the challenges facing inner-city youth. At 14, he joined Richmond OIC (Opportunities Industrialization Center), a summer youth employment program that gave him structure, discipline, and a foundation in responsibility that would shape the rest of his life. After graduating from Virginia Union University, he began his career at the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority, providing case management to youth and families. Working in high-risk neighborhoods, he saw young people drawn into drug activity and violence, and he developed a passion for creating opportunities that would empower youth through mentorship and independence.
Inspired by the biblical passage in Genesis, "Am I my brother's keeper?", David and Katrina founded Brothers' Keeper Inc. to support vulnerable youth and families. The organization began with job readiness services and grew over the years to include therapeutic mentoring, Therapeutic Day Treatment in schools, Intensive In-Home Services, Mental Health Skill Building, crisis services, substance treatment programs, and community engagement services for the IDD population.
Today, Brothers' Keeper Inc. holds 10 licenses through the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and has served thousands of individuals across the region. Under David and Katrina's leadership, the organization has grown to roughly 80 service providers united by a simple philosophy: do what we say we are going to do, and help those who truly need it.
